Chapter 6: Who is Responsible for Internal Controls?

Lian, Sam's Manager

NYS&You: What is your number one risk?

Lian: Mail center security is our number one risk. We monitor federal sites that keep us up-to-date on the latest threats and best practices.

NYS&You: What do you do to make sure that the policies and procedures Sam is following are working?

Lian: We periodically test our controls. I conduct random samples, spot checks, and observe the mail team. We even perform periodic drills.

NYS&You: What advice do you have for other managers?

Sam: One of the most important components of an agency's internal control program is the process used to identify and evaluate risks and the internal controls associated with each function. Managers must establish and maintain a program of continuing internal control review.
