Suspicious Activities: Objects

Recognizing and properly reporting suspicious objects are key to preventing incidents. Types of suspicious objects include packages, devices, and substances.

Suspicious packages can consist of an unattended bag, box, envelope, briefcase, or piece of luggage; the contents of which are unknown. A suspicious package may be one that matches something described in a threat or has a threatening message attached. A suspicious package may have:

• A handwritten address, a misspelled name, or other spelling errors
• No label or missing tag
• Poor packaging, taping or wrapping, or, excessive tape
• “Personal” or “confidential” marked on it
• Excessive postage
• Stains or leakage
• Unexplained odors
• Visible or protruding wires
• A ticking, buzzing, or sloshing sound

Identifying characteristics of suspicious devices are unusual wires or batteries, tanks, bottles, or bags, a clock or timer. Take another look at the photo with the fire extinguisher. Fire extinguishers have designated places and should never be used as a door prop. If you see a fire extinguisher being used to prop a door open you should immediately report this to your supervisor and/or security.

A suspicious package may be placed or planted:

• In and around landscaping
• Next to a fueling station
• In or behind trash containers
• Under or behind a vending machine
• Behind a restroom fixture
• Behind ceiling panel or light fixture

Be observant for suspicious packages, or devices during any level of emergency. The general rules are:

• Do not touch, cover, or move suspicious objects.
• Clear the area — keep people safely away.
• Do not use a cell phone or portable radio within 300 feet.
