Policies and procedures should be:
- Clear
- Understandable
- Reviewed routinely
- Updated as necessary
With more and more federal funding, it is important to have well documented procedures with good internal controls.
But, have you ever picked up a policy or procedure and not known what to do after reading it? If you can say yes, you probably felt lost and confused.
Don’t create the same feelings for others. Instead, write your policies with the following questions in mind:
- Can someone new understand this information?
- Can someone perform the function adequately by simply reading it?
- Does this procedure have purpose?
- Is the procedure effective and efficient?
- Is this procedure relevant to the mission?
