Chapter 4: Internal Controls - Stolen Property

Stolen Property

Internal Controls: A Success Story
Guest Columnist: Trooper McCoy

One of my priorities as a New York State Trooper is to prevent crime and enforce the law, and I really enjoy what I do. But, when the only thing standing between me and going home to my family is a stack of paperwork I have to fill out about a robbery, it’s hard not to think about cutting corners. The most recent sting operation I helped with proved it’s worth taking the time to do it right.

We received a tip about a warehouse filled with stolen property. By following the procedures and taking the time to fill out all the information, down to the very last serial number in the original theft reports, we were able to get these items back to the families they were taken from.

Those procedures we follow - obtaining and keeping accurate records - are examples of internal controls. Simply put, internal controls are about the right people doing the right thing. When we all pay attention to them, we can deliver on our promise to all New Yorkers. We’re able to fulfill our mission successfully.
